The Clermontoise is an annual 5 km charity walk/run uniquely for women of all ages (7 – 107!) organised by the Clermont-Ferrand Running Club, and backed by the town council. The relatively short distance is chosen specifically to encourage participation by sporty or non-sporty women and children (children must be accompanied by an adult). The money raised goes to seven local charities which help women with breast cancer (through various means, such as raising awareness for breast cancer detection, creating support groups, help for the families of women who are hospitalised, purchase of equipment such as wigs and arm cushions for women undergoing treatment). The Clermontoise was set up then years ago, in 2008, and since then the number of participants has increased eight-fold to over 18,304 last year, and the money raised has increased ten-fold in this period to over 189 245 Euros. Thanks to the organisation being voluntary, the entire proceeds go to charity.
The route begins in the Place de Jaude, and follows a gentle loop which passes through the Jardin le Coq (to see the map click on the ‘Parcours’ tab). The Clermontoise begins at 10 am on Sunday 21 May, and is preceded by a fun warm up to music at 9.30 am. There is a similar warm down at 11 am, followed by the presentation of the prizes at 11.30 am.
You can register either as a competitor for the timed race, or as a participant for completing the 5 km circuit by walking at your own pace. To enter the race you need to be born before 2004, and provide a medical certificate stating that you are fit to run 5 km. Competitors are timed, and must register before 14 May.
Registration can be as an individual, or even better, as part of a team. A team must consist of at least 10 people (who can be entered in the competition or walk), and should be given an original name. Teams are by category – friends, family, work, club or school/university, and there is a prize for each category. Members can be added to the team at any time during the registration period by indicating the team name on the registration form.
A pink T-shirt is given to the first 20,000 people who register. These T-shirts are to be worn on the day of the Clermontoise to create the impressive wave of pink which spreads the length of the route during the event. The T-shirts and numbers worn by participants need to be picked up from a stand in the Place de Jaude from Friday 19 May. The number must be attached to the front of the T-shirt, so please remember to bring safety pins on the day of the event. Participants who register before 1 May can have their numbers personalised by having their name printed with the number.
If you would like to take part in the Clermontoise this year, you can either register on-line at this site (from the end of February), or fill in a form available at the specialist running shop Running Conseil (6 rue du Puits Artésien, Clermont-Ferrand). Registration costs 10 Euros for adults, and 5 Euros for under-12s (12 Euros for adults and 6 Euros for under-12s registered after May 13). Further donations can be added during the registration process if desired.
